Artist Statement
What interests me in my work is creating photographically a sense of free space, with open-ended meaning, by using subject matter from forgotten and other marginalized aspects of the built environment. I often do this by searching for environments that are in transition, under construction or demolition, or built to be temporary. I strip away obvious references to function and purpose and, instead, emphasize each scene’s sculptural and display characteristics. In this way, these spaces are freed from their initial and sometimes negative contexts (disorder, abandonment, commercialism, tackiness), and instead suggest a kind of alternate idealism created through the photograph.
